Computer Vision Clinic

Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) also called Digital Eye Strain, is a set of eye related issues, caused due to prolonged use of electronic devices such as cell phones, computers, tablets. When these devices and screens are viewed for extended period of time, many of us experience eye discomfort and vision problems.

What are the causes of Computer Vision Syndrome ?

Some of the causes of CVS or Digital Eye Strain are :

  • Poor posture when using the device
  • Sitting or staring too close at the device
  • Glare / reflections on the screens
  • Using old monitors / low resolution screens
  • Not using prescribed glasses if any

We diagnose the condition through a comprehensive eye examination, including tests such as visual acuity measurements, refraction needs.

Treatment / Management Options

Usually CVS can be alleviated by adopting changes in how you see the screen, using better postures, and regular eye examinations. Special lenses, Vision therapy may be prescribed as necessary.

What is Low Vision ?

As you age you may experience changes in your sight. In most cases, your vision can be corrected with glasses. However, when your ophthalmologist says that your vision cannot be corrected with ordinary spectacles, medicines, or surgery and you still have some usable vision, you have what is called “Low Vision.”

What causes Low Vision?

Some of the conditions that can result in low vision are diabetic retinopathy, maculopathy, hypertensive retinopathy, age related macular degeneration, myopic macular degeneration, retinal dystrophy, retinal vascular occlusion, optic neuropathy, glaucoma, corneal dystrophy, corneal degeneration, corneal scar, aniridia, etc.

Difficulty reading due to low vision

What problems do those with Low Vision face?

Some of the common inconveniences that people with low vision have are difficulty in reading books, newspaper, sewing, moving around in dim lighting, locating food on their plate, using smart phones, using computers, recognizing faces, watching TV, moving around in bright environment etc,.

Many of these problems can be managed by using some simple adaptations. Specialized magnifying devices that make things appear bigger will be useful to many; especially to those whose would like to read smaller print. Some magnifying devices help in distance vision especially to those who would like to identify bus numbers, name boards and letters written on blackboard.

Vision Enhancement and Devices for Low Vision

Jaya Eye Care has an exclusive vision enhancement clinic for those with low vision where qualified professionals will understand your specific needs and prescribe devices that best suits your vision condition and help you see better.

Some optical and non-optical devices offer very simple and relatively inexpensive solutions. Other devices, such as electronic and digital magnifiers, may be slightly more complex and costly. Training will be given for both optical devices and electronic or digital devices so that you can use them efficiently and effectively.

Apart from this, we can explore possible adaptations on your smart phone, tab, computer/ laptop and provide training to use your existing vision for effective use.

Why Special Contact Lens (Scleral Contact Lens) ?

Some patients are not able to wear regular contact lenses due to problems such as irregular cornea, keratoconus etc. Even if they are fitted with contact lenses, they feel very uncomfortable wearing them. Nowadays, there are special contact lenses to address these issues. These are called Screral Contact Lenses.

What is Keratoconus ?

Keratoconus is a condition where there is progressive thinning of the cornea in both eyes. This results in the cornea re-shaping itself like a ‘cone’. Hence it got its name, Kerato meaning cornea, and Conus meaning cone. Usually, one eye is affected more than the other eye. Typically such patients have distorted vision due to the presence of ‘irregular astigmatism’.

Many other conditions can result in irregular astigmatism. Some of them are Pellucid marginal degeneration, Keratoglobus, Peter’s Anomaly, Steven Johnson’s syndrome, Estasia in post corneal refractive surgery, Post Radial Keratotomy, Post corneal keratoplasty, Post INTACs, Post C3R treatment, Post-traumatic corneal scarring, Post healed corneal ulcer, Post healed chemical injury etc.

Usually, these patients are fitted with rigid contact lenses to correct irregular astigmatism. However, patients stop wearing them due to lack of comfort with hard/rigid lenses. At Jaya Eye Care, we prescribe special contact lenses called Scleral contact lenses / Mini Scleral Device (MSD) for these patients. These special contact lenses provide correct vision as well as are very comfortable to wear. The latest in this category of lenses is the Corneo Scleral Device (CSD).

This is the only non-surgical / non-invasive method available to provide full vision with the best comfort even in the most extreme corneal irregularities. These devices are easy to wear / remove with appropriate training and practice. They last for 2 to 3 years, or even longer if the eye condition has not progressed much.
